History of Didim Altinkum Turkey
Didim was officially called Didyma in history and was an ancient Ionian city. Next to Delphi, Didyma was the most renowned oracle center of the Hellenic world, first mentioned among the Greeks in the Homeric Hymn to Apollo but preceding literacy and even the colonization of Ionia.
Didim was originally a pre-Greek religious group that grew up around a sacred wood and holy spring. This natural spring was the place where Leto conceived and gave birth to the twins Artemis and Apollo who were fathered by Zeus.
The temple of Apollo was built in Didim and since Apollo spells as didymoi in Greek, the source of Didim’s name seems to be very clear. According to a legend, the name Didim comes from the word “Didyma” that means “twin”.
It refers to the twin God and Goddess, Apollo and Artemis, who were supposedly born here. It is a blend of high adventure and complete relaxation, of the ancient world mysticism and the modern world enticement.
Didyma belonged to Miletos which is one of the first Greek colonisations in Anatolia.
Didim is one of the Turkey’s best kept secrets.
